Subject: Columbus Flight Watch addresses backup altimeter issue

Columbus Flight Watch is actively addressing an important issue that has repercussions for many Central Ohio airports, as well as many general aviation airports across the nation.

Over the past few years, as stand-alone AWOS & ASOS weather units have been installed at numerous airports, an important backup redundant capability has been lost as instrument approach procedures have been updated. Namely, if the AWOS or ASOS would fail for any reason (i.e. sensor failure, power failure, transmitter failure), the pilot would be faced with an instrument approach procedure that would immediately become NOT AUTHORIZED.

Columbus Flight Watch encourages you to read the letter that was sent to the airport managers of the following Central Ohio airports ...

4I3 Knox Co./Mt. Vernon

I23 Fayette Co./Wash Court House

MRT Union Co./Marysville

LHQ Fairfield Co./Lancaster

MNN Marion Municipal/Marion

OSU Don Scott/Ohio State University
